Yes, they actually thought up a way to charge your cell phone or MP3 player from the shirt off of your own back! United States scientist invented a micro fiber fabric that creates its own electricity. The person wearing the shirt can generate power by simply walking the loop or if a nice beach breeze blows in. This is a very economical way to safe energy and money on that electric bill. The fibers are thinner than human hair and are covered in gold. They run all throughout the fabric. When you walk they rub together creating energy. I need one of these! As of now they are working on a way to protect the wires if they get wet, but hey on a sunny day i can walk around with my uncharged cellphone or i-pod and charge it! I mean we have the i-phone which is a computer at your hands any time of day and now a shirt that can charge your i-phone if you are out and it dies. What will they think of next?http://abcnews.go.com/Technology/GadgetGuide/WireStory?id=4284493&page=2
The “Google Epidemic”
Google had become one of the most popular search engines on the internet, but isn’t as helpful as it seems. Google requires neither the use of critical thinking nor research skills. The google generation is comprised of young people that were born or brought up during the internet age. Their web skills are considered by some to be proficient. The report I read mentions that a change has occurred in behavioral traits from previous generations to the google generation. These traits include impatience when searching the internet, no tolerance for delays in finding the information needed, and a need for instant gratification. These users are looking for “the answer” rather than for information to develop an answer. Students of all ages seem to take the internet and all it offers for granted. Findings state , “young people are dangerously lacking information skills.” Librarians are now required to adapt quickly to the students need for instant gratification. I will admit there were times when i was younger when I needed to do research. Instead of going to the library, I would jump on google and type in keywords. I quickly realized that google isn’t always as reliable as librarians. Students need to put more time and energy into their research and reinforce their information-gathering skills by looking beyond Google for “the answer”.
Teens and College students misusing the internet.
I do not think that teenagers and even upper classmen in colleges appreciate the internet. They use it to write things about one another that they wouldn’t normally be able to say face to face. They also post inappropriate pictures of themselves and others. I have also seen incidents of provacative websites being made about people that had no clue were on the internet. Alot of internet users abuse the access that is granted and do not use the resources appropriately. Cults, gangs, and even your normal highschool students often take this luxury for granted by organizing violence over the world wide web. They do this by using facebook, my space, aim, and self made websites. Besides these violent groups, even worse there are pedophiles who have access to young children and teenagers through facebook, aim and myspace. People put their personal information up on these websites, not realizing that just by lying about their ages they invite the wrong crowd, such as pedophiles. The internet should be taken much more seriously and their should be regulations for people under a certain age. Facebook and myspace should be regulated more vigerously and people causing violence over the internet should be penalized.
My first blog ever!
Hey everyone! My name is Missy and this is my first blog. I hope to learn more about Randall library, databases and how to conduct research properly. The course description says we will explore new ways to research. We will learn about evolution of libraries, library systems, databases and organization. We will learn how to use and understand catalogs, databases, and analyze online material. I am excited to learn how to properly use the web to research and to use my new skills in the future. This is the first blog i have ever posted, and I will complete more of these in the future.
